The Region, Terroir and Vineyards of Casa Navarro Cordeiro

“Recognising the suitability of the Beiras region for the production of quality wine, with a widely established reputation,” on 11 February 1993, Sub-region Terras de Sicó was created by Ordinance No. 158. This designation was later amended in 2011, adopting the new name: Beira Atlântico Regional Wine – Terras de Sicó Sub-region.

Atlantic-influenced, with two clearly defined seasons. Cold, humid winters contrast with hot, dry summers, marked by wide diurnal temperature ranges.

The majority of vineyards are located on flat terrain or low-elevation plateaus.

Freiria Vineyard

Podentes, Penela, Portugal

In the 1960s, the vineyard that today forms the soul of Casa Navarro Cordeiro was planted. More than six decades later, its deep roots and twisted trunks tell stories of time, resilience, and authenticity.

From this vineyard come our two main grape varieties, which define our single-varietal wines:

Baga

The emblematic red grape variety of Bairrada, known for its great character and longevity, producing structured, firm wines with remarkable ageing potential.

Fernão Pires ou Maria Gomes

One of Portugal’s oldest and most expressive white grape varieties, aromatic and vibrant, bringing freshness and elegance to our white wines.

The coexistence of these old vines within a single plot is our greatest heritage. Each harvest stands as a testament to the art of time and the richness of the land.

Lagariças Vineyard

Tradition inspires the future.

In 2023, we acquired a new plot of land, which we replanted with Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional — the classic Douro blend — as a tribute to a region that means so much to us. Here, however, on clay-limestone soils with subtle schist outcrops, these grape varieties take on a distinct and unique identity.

The new planting of Lagariças Vineyard is our creative laboratory, where tradition and innovation meet. It is here that we cultivate the future of Casa Navarro Cordeiro, with the same passion and care we have inherited from the past.
