On our estate, animals play a role far more important than simply providing company — they are true partners in caring for the land. They live in harmony with the environment and contribute daily to the natural balance of the ecosystem we strive to preserve.

We have two ever-watchful dogs, a curious cat, two black Merino sheep — a native Portuguese breed — and two Kunekune pigs, known for their calm nature and excellent grazing abilities.

For about half of the year, these animals live in the vineyard, where they help naturally control weeds and aerate the soil through their movement. Thanks to this shared work, we reduce the need for heavy machinery and do not use herbicides, promoting a more living and healthy soil.

At Casa Navarro Cordeiro, we follow sustainable agricultural practices, embracing an approach that views the estate as a living organism — where plants, animals, soil, and people coexist in balance. In the vineyard, we apply methods that respect natural rhythms and seasonal cycles, fostering fertile and vibrant soils.

Permanent ground cover helps protect the soil from erosion, increase biodiversity, and create a more stable ecosystem. Combined with the presence of animals, which contribute to natural cleaning and aeration, we are able to minimise mechanical and chemical intervention, strengthening soil vitality and the overall health of the vineyard.
